Surely they could overpower the Ukrainian air force and even carpet bomb areas. Are they that ineffective or are they being held back by Putin and if the later will he unleash them? I guess that they are curtailed not by the Ukrainian airforce but by western supplied air defence systems. Using missiles is safer.. That’s just a guess though.

I was born in 1942, my Dad was shoved off to Burma, I never met him until I was 4. The Ukranians are doing it tough! I think Pearl Harbour and the Lusitinia may have had some influence.

A very simplistic statement which may read as even mocking the current situation or showing a weak and feeble stance. Cannot help but feel it adequately represents my sentiments however. I remember moaning because the football wasn't on.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I feel confident that under the radar communications are happening via a variety of channels all the time. There has to be a readiness on both sides to draw a line and accept compromises. There also has to be bankable guarantees that Russia doesn't do this again. I am not without optimism and haven't been for a month or two. Russia having to conscript, running short of weaponry, seeing low moral and suffering pushbacks may be enough for Putin to realise he needs to look for a way out. China may encourage that. Ukraine won't want to cede anything, but they cannot sustain a fight like this without western support. Nato won't be present at any negotiations but their members breath will be on the necks of those who are. When people stare into an abyss is often the time when they realise they must step back. Khrushchev did so. Whether Putin is as wise remains to be seen.

Infact the only side that looked for peace and willing to talk was Putin! From what I have seen! All zelensky had to say was "Okay we will not join nato and remain neutral" How many lives could have been saved? And how many further lives could be saved if he just says those magic words! Instead he is too busy meeting celebrities, musicians, having video calls to glastonbury etc... and getting 10s of billions of dollars, euros and pounds from everywhere else! We should be doing everything we can to de-escalate the situation! no one wins in a nuclear war! It seems anyone who wants Peace is automatically a far right extremist or a bigot!

What you talking about? Everyone wants peace except Putin. He pulls his army out and it will be over. If Ukraine pull out, Ukraine is over. NATO is a defensive alliance and have never been a threat to Russia - it's the usual bollocks propaganda from Putin to create a 'the rest of the world is against us' mentality in Russia, when it's simply not true. You can't blame Ukraine for wanting to be safer by joining. The only escalation again is coming from Russia. It's them who invaded, its them who ran sham referendums, it's them giving nuclear threats. A catalogue of poor judgement and continued poor judgement from Putin is causing the continued escalation. Are you suggesting that Ukraine just concedes the land they had illegally taken away from them by brute force, destruction and and mass homicide? What if Russian troops invaded your home town, smashed it to pieces, raped your woman, killed a few of your pals and forced you to live in an authoritarian regime which you had no choice over? There's no peace for the victims in this. Would you be happy to accept it or would you hope that your neighbours/allies rallied around to help? As others have said, there will be constant peace talk dialogue going on behind the scenes. It's just not in the public domain. My guess is that Russia won't use nuclear weapons as they will lose China. Their soldiers don't know why they are there, they are untrained, lack equipment and most importantly have low morale. Ukraine will gradually force Russia out and will join NATO. Russia will become a pariah state for 25+ years until they elect a western thinking President. Until then, they can hang out with North Korea. The best outcome for Russia is that they can claim Crimea.

So what's the peace solution which appeases both sides? Too late for that now, that was in April where a peace deal was close but vetoed by us. Ukraine would have committed to stay out of Nato and the EU and be neutral and would have recognised the Russian speaking areas as Russian. They were still negotiating on that last part but both Biden and Johnson insisted that wasn't signed. Now it's war and all the consequences that come with it.
