As Newcastle boss, didn't Alan Pardew once shape to head-butt an opposing player? Can anyone remember the sanction?

The Cantona incident ended up in the magistrates' court, and the player was ordered to complete a community service order.

As part of his defence against any proceedings, PV or his lawyer will obviously plead provocation. Is there any suggestion that any of it was racially motivated?

Whatever view the tribunal takes of the matter, I fear he could still face a hefty penalty.

I just hope it isn't so severe as a) to prompt PV to reconsider his future in football management and/or b) to undermine our start to the 2022-23 season.

Very serious offence, a club not controlling the crowd resulting in the endangering and abuse of individuals. A ten point reduction penalty would not be out of order - I think this has already been suggested by a Manure fan. On the actions of our manager, he was only protecting himself from what may have ensued. Well, if it had happened at out ground, you think the club would not be punished?

Initially, PV showed admirable composure and restraint, but then he seemed to snap.

True, he was being taunted but he wasn't actually being physically assaulted, so I don't think it's strictly accurate to say he was 'protecting' himself.

When the headlines say: "Police are investigating", I take it that means investigating apparently thousands of offences under the Football Offences Act 1991 that were committed on Thursday night. Or are they still too busy trying to discover who may have had a glass of wine or beer after work in 2020 or 2021?

Turned back on the guy with a kick to the nuts, from what I saw, followed by a punch.

Don't get me wrong; I fully support PV; he should never have been put in so much danger.

Someone could die soon, couldn't they?

If someone aggressively gets in your face like that, they shouldn't be surprised if they get put down. There is more concern in the types involved in the pitch invasion than Vieira's behaviour.

Agree. And those responsible for proper stewarding and crowd control.

This is not Roy Of The Rovers, is it? This is 2022 and the possible ramifications of allowing throngs of people onto the playing area amongst players and staff are frightening. It's a worry.

I'm afraid that Patrick will be sanctioned for that attack at a time when the initial flare up had gone.

Not fair, I know.

Disagree, if someone gets right in your face, insults you and then tells you to 'F off' I think you have a right to respond.

Don’t forget there had already been a pitch invasion after their last goal. There was zero attempt to control the crowd. Even then, in the circumstances, where were the stewards/ police escort to take PV through an out of control crowd to the away dressing room on the other side of the pitch. The incident beggars belief on Everton’s count. PV merely reacted to extreme provocation in a foreign language (scouser) which must sound pretty scary for a Frenchman or Englishman. It was lucky the other Everton fans did not get involved. Things could have got very messy. The whole scene breaks all crowd control laws. To blame Vieira for lashing out in extreme circumstances would be ducking the much bigger issue.
If PV is in any way punished then the sanctions on Everton should be colossal for blatantly breaking the law and then allowing PV to be caught up in it through lack of supervision of a super star having to pass through the invaders unprotected returning to his dressing room.
Totally irresponsible on behalf of Everton’s crowd controllers who were non existent.

I have no idea whether it was a racist comment that made him snap but something bad must have been said to make him suddenly turn like thst.
I am not in the know so wrong of me to say it was a racist comment.
Ridiculous that palace staff had to walk across the pitch at the end - poor organisation.
Everton should have the book thrown at tham.
Allegedly the stewards were told not stop them if they wanted to invade the pitch
