I always thought that Potter would struggle at Chelsea. I think he is a great coach and plays attractive football. Over time as well his recruitment is generally good. However, at Chelsea they want instant success and where you have an interfering owner who is randomly signing players he was always going to find it difficult.

I think with the right backing here, he could well succeed. He'd certainly get us playing in a good style.

Potter did on the face of it do a good job at Brighton but they have very good players there and the feats of his replacement could suggest that to an extent that he was underperforning.
Many of the squad have really demonstrated their potential under the new manager.
If Potter was to join I do worry he would to too clever by half e.g experimenting with Olise at wing back or Eze as a false number 9.
He has history of playing players in unsuitable positions at both Brighton and Chelsea (think Sterling, RLC, March at wing back, midfielders played up front).
The virtue of Roy this time round is he kept things simple and did not complicate matters.
He saw our problems were in the attacking third and largely fixed that even in the absence of a prolific striker.
Potter's team's have a habit of controlling possession without converting that into goals.

That sums up my worries regarding Potter. He is a good coach, his record regardless of Chelsea tells you that , but It is always a case of horses for courses, and there really is a question as to whether our course is one he is suited for.

I agree with you Patrick, but however much we all appreciate what Roy has done in the past few weeks, he is not the future and, even if he is still around, we do need, at least, some kind of succession plan in place.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

When Potter departed for Chelsea after 6 PL games, Brighton were 4th in the table. The PL campaign, of course, was in its infancy.

Potter's record at Brighton :
P 135, W 42, D 46, L 47 Win percentage 31.1%.

Edited by Willo (30 May 2023 9.43am)

31.1% is a very poor record, only Vieira and Holloway since Burley have a worse record, thats any manager who has managed at least 20 games, Pardews win ratio is over 40%

Really, Pardew's win ratio 40%?

Come back Pads, all is forgiven!

My darned mobile phone has received a constant stream of calls and messages following media speculation, causing annoyance in the Willo abode.Time to hit the "Power Off" button.

You have to take the draws into account too. If you work it out on a points per game ratio it works out as 1.27 which over a 38 game PL season gives you on average 48 points a season. Which for a smallish club like Brighton or Palace is a decent return and is basically where we've been for years. Could Potter elevate us higher? He did break the top 10 with Brighton last season, so maybe. If Roy isn't in the frame who would you want?

As others have said the team responds well when they keep it simple and does not over complicate things. I think potter is a man that over complicates things.

I honestly think Rodgers would be a good fit for 2-3 years.

Pardew 40.23%, only bettered by Pulis 42.86%, Roys 33.33& first time and 50% this time. unbelievably the best since the war was Dave Bassett 48.33

I would love Frank, but dont think he would want it, available, i would go for Rodgers, but No1 choice would be Roy, Ray and Paddy

Applying our current squad to the 3-4-2-1 that Potter favours (plus a couple of rumours) you end up with something like this

Johnstone

Richards Andersen Guehi

New Lerma Doucoure Hall

Olise Eze

Ayew/New

It's not a bad side, but the quality of that RWB is the make or break.
