This is a definition of populism which is also much derided but in this light doesn't seem too bad. In politics, the word populist refers to someone who puts ordinary people's rights above those of the wealthy and powerful. It is basically a synonym of democrat, which when spelled with a lower-case d is simply a person who believes in democratic principles of rule by the people, freedom, and equality.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

Nor has there been. Just a steely determination to expose the dangers and hypocrisy. Holding opinions and arguing for them is fine but in a democracy no one man decides policy. Allowing public sentiment, and not the considered opinion of those elected to represent the people, to determine policy is the essence of populism. Trying to go behind or above the elected representatives cannot be tolerated. When a President decides to try to overturn the results of an election so he can continue in office, that action of itself destroys his credibility, whatever any individual thinks about any particular policy. Populism of the type represented by Trump is a big step on the way to dictatorship. They rarely end well, or serve the needs of the people.

I must confess I find him incredibly entertaining, particularly in his Twitter glory days. He shouldn’t be anywhere near a serious political seat, but as a character he’s bloody good value. I can’t believe people on either side take him so seriously.

There's a serious issue that, although the guy's a joke and a bit of a prat, he's still better for the country than the other serious candidates. I presume we're all being taken for a ride these days.
