Please don't start that Wisbechesque codswallop.

We have had a stable population for centuries. The Romans and Normans contributed next to nothing to our gene pool.

Some of us have North Western European and Scandinavian heritage but the vast majority of genes swimming around Britain haven't changed much for 2000 years and beyond.

On my mothers side, for example, I only got English and Scottish genes. I'm 84% English, a bit Scottish and a little bit Irish and Welsh, Norwegian and Germanic.

You will find something similar for the vast majority.

Hybrid vigour or heterosis is a good thing, but most of our new friends don't breed with the existing population.
We now have a growing Balkanisation of Britain.

It might match my analysis but it’s not codswallop. It’s the truth.

There is never a stable population. The only thing that varies is the rate of change and the rate of change for almost everything in life is increasing very quickly.

You either adapt to that or you fight against it. Fighting this kind of change is as pointless as challenging windmills. Much better to work with the change to shape it and control the outcomes.

What your own lineage is has no bearing at all on what that of your great great great grandchildren will be. What was is no guide to the future and an irrelevancy.

Just get over it and concentrate on ensuring our traditions, culture and heritage not just survives but is treasured by our future generations wherever their own immediate genes originated. As we know all our genes can ultimately be traced back to the same source anyway.

Population growth and decline :

For every one kid born of taxpaying parents, how many are born of spongers ? 1.5 kids ? 2.5 ? 10 ?

The Welfare State is social engineering. Acting against the Laws of Darwin. Reproducing failures and losers......imagine in the Jungle if all the slow Lions & slow Zebras reproduced....to the expense of the fast ones ?

you just end up with a Serengeti awash with fat lazy Zebras that couldnt be bothered switching off the video games. Instead of chasing their dinner, the Lions would put in a compensation claim, for tripping on some rocks, to buy a dominoes delivery.

Re your last paragraph, it may not be fair but if the money stays within the generational family, personally I feel it would be more beneficial to society. The however many pounds are taken in Inheritance Tax goes where? Weapons for Ukraine? All taxes get lost in the 'what can we spend it on', whereas hopefully my offspring will be able to revert to a one worker family.

Re your first paragraph, I think the short term solution is the exodus to the Home Counties and hybrid working. Those of us in Sussex are experiencing the house building growth beyond local requirements. Estate Agents report that by far the majority of enquiries for new houses are from South London residents. Not pleasant seeing villages turned into towns and countryside concreted over.

The best way to solve most housing problems? Change the mindset that property is an asset to make a profit on and revert to it being somewhere to live. Start by penalising multi property owning landlords, so that more become available for sale to those that need them.

An example re the housebuilding in Sussex and why it is not actually needed? There are 3000 empty dwellings in Brighton that for various reasons are locked out of the market.

The building around Horsham has been “off the scale” in recent years and none can be described as affordable.
Regarding your point about empty houses, my mother-in-law passed away nearly 2 years ago, prior to her passing we had commenced an insurance claim for subsidence. To cut a very long story short, the claim and work has only recently been finished( nearly 2.5 years). We therefore were unable to sell her house until last month. Throughout this trauma we had to pay council tax, the week we completed the sale I received a letter from Council advising that, as the property had been empty for 2 years, they have increased the Council tax by 100%, thank the lord we sold

Horsham, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Uckfield; all experiencing housing development way beyond what is required. Then there's the villages that are doubling in size. The 3000 house new town outside Lewes has apparently been declined (greenfield site, as are the rest of the developments), but money talks...

I sympathise re your own situation and the time it takes to get money 'into the pot'. I may have a similar situation myself soon.

hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing.

I can certainly agree that taxes are wastefully spent, but the obvious difference is a tax *in theory* benefits everyone. Your suggestion only benefits those who already have wealth, and the inequality will continually worsen.

I think the days of one worker families are already a thing of the past.

I couldn't agree more re housing and the commodification of it. Multi property ownership should be taxed to the hilt.

Only if you consider a person's entire worth to be their economic output.

Sir, we have common ground despite being from different ages and of assumed different political stances. This is what debating should be about; much more likely to find consensus.

I suppose where we differ is on the first point but we can leave it there as mutual respect.

To repeat (again) I am not talking about non-Europeans, which is where the last comments appear to have headed.

The places highlighted are all now EU / EEA.

I'd like to claim that I somehow lured you in, but by complete accident of discussion evolution you appear to have come round to my argument.

well i do consider a whole street of 'can't work, won't work, will have a ton of babies, and let Daddy Government pay for the upkeep'' ....to be an affront to the laws of Nature.

One reason Employed Westerners are failing to reproduce is that housing has been priced out of their income. Largely driven by a) wealthy career women in places like London or b) welfare spongers in places like our Northern Towns.

Compare & contrast the UK to Morocco, Mexico, or Thailand. In these latter places, a working man, with a shovel, can support a family of three or four kids with a stay-at-home wife. Not the UK nor the decadent West.
