I sleep with a dumbell bar next to my bed. The flat downstairs got burgled and I'm buggered if that's going to happen to me. I'm a peace loving bloke who hates confrontation, but when it's in your own home, you have to make a stand.

My mum lives on her own, if someone broke ito her house and tried to rob her stuff and I cought them, I'd batter them with whatever I could get my hands on.

I'm wholeheartedy against violence to innocent people, but these people aren't innocent and must accept that breaking into someone's house with the intention to steal their stuff comes with a risk, not from old bill but from the tooled up owner.

I think Keith Murray said it best when he rapped
"If you aint fly you cant play with my yo-yo".

I'm sure you'll agree.

It's just a shame that I'm the one who'd end up there.

I'm not against using force against a b****** burgler, but not a loaded gun UNLESS he was threatening my life or anyone elses, which most burglers don't do they? they are scum, you have every right to batter them, but i cannot see how you can justify killing someone if they pose no threat to anyones elses life. And no one has mentioned his family and friends who will miss him for the rest of their lives. No one has answered my question that if one of your relatives was burgling and got shot and killed - would you think he had deserved it?

Most of you are essentially espousing vigilantism, and saying that it's alright for us to take the law into our own hands. Fair enough, if that's what you believe -- but where do you draw the line? What about the example quoted of an abused wife, would you prosecute? What if a bus driver ran over and killed someone for swearing at them, is that OK? After all, they could claim they were in fear of being attacked... Where does it stop?

Oh come on Slugs, you know what we're all talking about here is the sanctity of one's home, an Englishman's home is his castle etc, if you want to call vigilantism, fair enough, I'd call it self defence - which it is the minute they step into your home and threaten your safety. It stops there, simple. We should be able to use whatever means available to protect ourselves from, as you said, knives, guns, dirty needles, whatever, just as Tony Martin did, the only thing he at hand had that was gonna turn around his situation was a gun, so he blasted the b****** into the darkness. He couldn't run, there was no back way out of the house. I take your point and agree, Tony Martin should be in a hospital getting the help he needs not banged up with hardened criminals. If the vermin hadn't entered his home, he'd be out tending his farm now with his dogs at his side, not sitting in a cold cell. HE'S THE VICTIM!

Despotic, good post, I thought you'd following the predictable left-wing red-brick road on this one, jumping to the defence of the REAL criminals in this case, but I was wrong, nice one.

All the threads that Slugs had a moan about aren’t about hatred or politics, Christ, all people want is to feel safe on their own streets and safe in their homes, is that really too much to ask for?

I understand your point Pete, but my question remains... where do you draw the line? You obviously feel it is acceptable to take a life in certain circumstances, and clearly you would go further than the law allows. But how far?

Don't you see? One man's limit is another man's fair game. Not everyone is as level-headed as you, and Martin is a perfect example -- an unbalanced mind frozen with fear, and a deadly weapon. Not a good combination, I'm sure you'll agree. Matt with a big lump of metal is scary enough.

Incidentally, was his gun held legally? A genuine question, I just wondered.

Fair comment, I know I wouldn't kill them, just knock them out.

His argument was that he did consider his life to be threatened! And, if you're content to give someone a battering, what happens if the little git dies of his injuries afterwards? No-one mentions Tony Martin's family and friends, either, who'd have missed him as well if the original murder verdict had been upheld. And, in answer to your final point, anyone who goes in to a place with intent to rob places themself at risk that they may encounter someone even more violent than themselves so they can't really complain about the outcome, regardless of whether they're related to me or not.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

sorry cucking, i thought the kid was shot in the back, i don't really know why he felt his life was in danger - was fred armed? why was his back to tony? burglary is a violent crime in that it's violent towards a persons property... but not them, except very rarely. Your relative would not be able to complain if they were fred would they? they'd be dead. Tony Martin would be missed by his family of course, but not forever.

You draw the line at the doorstep of someone's home. I also sleep tooled-up - my enemies are many - I have a baseball bat next to the bed, a small baton tucked under the mattress just in case, and various hidden 'items' strategically placed around the house, believe me, if someone comes in uninvited they're gonna be leaving in an ambulance. I certainly wouldn't try to kill them, but I wouldn't be too careful how hard I hit 'em and if they die from injuries received, that's their own fault. In my book I would have used 'justified force'. OK, You can't justify actually killing in cold blood, but as it stands, we have no rights in our own home, you hurt the intruder, you get punished and possibly sued. The law must change and reflect our fears.

Yeah, it was legal, it's part of a farmer’s tool kit apparently.

at last i see where you are coming from. killing is not justified and yes, it's plain wrong that you cannot defend your own home without fear of imprisonment indeed. plain stupid.

Bloody Hell Bexter, will you listen to the facts and take them on board! The place was in TOTAL darkness, Martin couldn't even see the kid, he just blasted the darkness, the kid wasn't running away if that's what you're implying, he just happened to be facing the other way. I still don't see how you can't grasp the fact that Tony Martin's life WAS at risk, for all he knew they could have been crazed junkies!
'Hello, who's there? Could you tell me if you're armed and intend to kill me, coz if you aint, I'll let you just carry on, if you answer's yes, have some of this ya f***ers; Booom!'
Yeah right, that'll work!
'No Mr Farmer, you just toodle off to bed, we're only here for ya telly, night night!'
