sorry cucking, i thought the kid was shot in the back, i don't really know why he felt his life was in danger - was fred armed? why was his back to tony? burglary is a violent crime in that it's violent towards a persons property... but not them, except very rarely. Your relative would not be able to complain if they were fred would they? they'd be dead. Tony Martin would be missed by his family of course, but not forever.

Edited by Bexter (17 Jan 2003 11:01am)

The gun was fired into the blackness of night. Tony martin had no idea whether the kid was armed or not. Given the fact that carrying arms seems to be de rigeur for many criminals nowadays, I, for one, would support him in making that assumption. What is beyond dispute, however, is that Tony Martin was absolutely terrified, having already been the victim of several other burglaries. Your contention that burglary seldom involves violence is, at best, debatable. The burglar takes the risk when he enters premises unlawfully. If you are acting unlawfully, it can be argued that you forfeit your right to the protection of the law. You can't disrespect it on one hand and then expect it to protect you on the other.

The reason the parole board didn't let Tony Martin out, I've just read, is that he's "a danger to burglars." This seems a bit of a harsh reason for keeping someone incarcerated for a good few years of his life.

That's a really good point.

they were both in the wrong. you can't burgle, it's despicable, you can't go shooting at people, both illegal though in this case one was punishable by death and one by a few years inside.

then surely keeping him in prison with burglars is more dangerous!

oh but I forgot that burglars don't actually get punished under the joke that is British Law which makes the victims into the criminals. but that's ok with the 'go soft on the ciminals - it's not their fault' brigade. makes me f*cking sick

and I just read that big Dunc will receive no punishment for restraining that burglar.

maybe there is some sense out there but it wouldn't have surprised me it they hadn't "made an example" out of him.

Some of you seem to feel that burglary is a minor crime, just the theft of a few easily replaceable electrical items. Well to you it may be just that but to others, particularly the elderly or the isolated, it can be as psychologically damaging as a rape or a bereavement.

Tony Martin was repeatedly targeted by burglars and this played a major part in his increasing paranoia and mental instability.

Not so, Meerkat mate. It's just that some of us don't think that burglary is sufficiently serious to merit killing someone.

Yes, it is frightening and awful -- but 99% of the time your life is NOT in danger. And so killing for supposed self-defence seems to me to be something of an overreaction.

i think you are on dodgy ground saying that it is as damaging as rape. and i don't believe in the death penalty for rape, burglary, or manslaughter, luckily for tony martin, not so luckily for fred barrass.
