It's a shame for him that Benteke scored against Brighton. Mateta gets one start and scores from his only touch. Almost the perfect appearance. 7 games later he's not started and barely featured. Reminds me of Sorloth, scored against Chelsea but chalked off for no good reason, then didn't get a look in for months and months. With Batshuayi scoring against Everton and Benteke vs Chelsea, its going to be difficult to get a chance. Potentially, if we stick with 4-4-2 we'll need to drop Ayew for Zaha, and put Benteke and Batshuayi up front with Mateta coming off the bench.

Maybe once we've secured our place mathematically, Roy will feel free to give him and some others more time. I respect the need to be conservative, given how difficult our remaining games will be, and the high stakes if somehow things go wrong for us and right for others.

I was reading a recent Roy interview where he said the days are gone of just giving players games for the sake of it. He players want to play then they have to be better than the ones starting already. So I wouldn’t expect any favours to players or young lads to start.

I have a feeling that I may get somewhat of a backlash.....but.... Am I the only one who doesn't see what he fuss with Mateta is? Can't help but feel that one great moment against Brighton is really clouding people's judgement of him. Apart from that He seems not really up to Prem standard at the moment. (Of course we know players from abroad often need time to adapt and can do so). Seems unable keep the ball effectively, whether that be in hold up play or when running at players and not strong enough yet. I appreciate where you are coming from but tbf has Mateta had enough opportunities to say this about him? 1 start ( and a goal) and a couple of cameo appearances

I saw that, not very encouraging for the younger/fringe players

See my link in the earlier post, Benteke isn't playing well he has just gone from crap to average, sooner he leaves the better, and Wilf, Mateta and Eze will link up far better as a front two Surely that's a 3 not a 2

Could it be, that as Mateta is 'only' on an 18 month loan, that has a clause(?) that after 15 STARTS we, as a club, then have an 'Option' to buy? I would think we will see more of him NEXT season after all the contract situations with players & the manager have been sorted. Just an opinion/thought.

If I were him, I wouldn't sign unless given a decent chance.

The Mateta Deal Seems very Confusing, The only real comment about the situation is on Transfermkt which i think is the best site for most things and their statement is "Crystal Palace are obliged to buy Mateta for €14m plus €3m in add-ons after his first Premier League appearance" if that is correct he is not on loan because the loan clause has been broken and is now our player.
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

I thought it was reported at the time that we paid €3m for 18 month loan with a view to making it permanent for approx €14m if he made 15 starts or something like that. It was strange that Mainz let him go as he was banging them in as they were fighting relegation but were desparate for some money.
