Yes it will be paid off but not if we waste it spending on things we simply cannot afford. I have no idea who we owe debt to, but I do know that we are paying enormous amounts of interest on it. Look at what has happened in Greece, we need controlled spending which maintains our public services and encourages growth without maintaining areas of government where we are loosing money to no avail. Look at the police, a smaller force- yet crime is down 20%. As long as I like the majority of the people are not seriously adveresely affected then I think we should cut as much as possible; in order to live within our means.
as for the 20% drop in crime, well it could be suggested that the fact we have never imprisoned so many people may be something to do with it! Austerity (or doing nothing), is out of control and we are nowhere nearer paying of the debt than we where 5 yrs ago, we have never owed so much money and have no real plan of how to pay it back.

So what do YOU propose to do about it? I will vote a party which aims to boost our economy/ whilst eliminating the defecit. I would think that once the defecit is zero we will begin to save up the money to repay our debts.

So you have no idea where the majority of your money/taxes are being spent? Hmm. As for Greece, another example of those that you 'have no idea of' doing what they do best. Taking money from Joe public................because they can.

Most of the world's debt is own either by oil producers like Saudi Arabia or the likes of China - which owns most of the USA by all accounts.

What are the actual effects then? As all I'm hearing is Middle class with such gripes as property prices in trendy areas. They've even stopped moaning about the things that actually affect the poor.

you do realise that we are in over a trillion pounds worth of debt? Austerity is just a word for living within our means and yes cuts have to be drastic in order to save enough money to pay it off. It wouldn't be like this if we weren't in so much debt, lets get that sorted out first and we can then rebuild. I dont understand how people want to to vote for a party that wants to borrow even more, wasting taxpayers money through vast interest payments Of course we have to reduce the deficit and debt levels used to bail out the collapse of the economy that was used to shore up the damages of ineptitude coming from the private financial sector. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that cuts in front line public services, are the only option, raising new avenues of revenue and taxation were also viable options to reduce the impact on services of cuts.

Used to be you could rely on the left wing to reduce populations of countries, whilst employing thousands in the execution and corpse disposal business.
