Thatchers greatest achievement was probably to deny the Conservatives of their greatest post war prime minister in Michael Hessletine. I very much suspect had he come to power in 1980 rather than Thatcher, he'd have still been PM well into the 1990s.

The conservatives always bang on about Thatchr, but Hessletine was by far a more skilled politician, orator, statesman and leader.

From Billy Bragg, Calgary, AB, Canada, on the death of Margaret Thatcher:

This is not a time for celebration. The death of Margaret Thatcher is nothing more than a salient reminder of how Britain got into the mess that we are in today. Of why ordinary working people are no longer able to earn enough from one job to support a family; of why there is a shortage of decent affordable housing; of why domestic growth is driven by credit, not by real incomes; of why tax-payers are forced to top up wages; of why a spiteful government seeks to penalise the poor for having an extra bedroom; of why Rupert Murdoch became so powerful; of why cynicism and greed became the hallmarks of our society.

Raising a glass to the death of an infirm old lady changes none of this. The only real antidote to cynicism is activism. Don't celebrate - organise!

About the most sensible 'anti' Thatch outpouring I have seen but then again BB has always been a pretty intelligent and articulate chappie

People on here criticise Cameron when he blames the last Labour government for the s*** storm we are in as they claim he has had plenty of time (less than three years) to sort it all out.

On the other hand, 23 years after Maggie left office it is still acceptable to blame her for all the ills of our society.

A lot of today's sh1t can br traced back to Thatcherism/Reaganomics and the aggressive free market capitalism they espoused.

The world was changing, it had changed we were being left behind. As I've said before she got stuff wrong, anyone who had to sort out what she did is bound to have I just can't understand the myopic entrenched view of the left. It was that inflexibility at the time that helped make things more confrontational than necessary.

Just read this and thought it fairly well balanced.
