TalkSh!te pointed out that Smith had rocked up at the crease having been 80 not out overnight and found himself batting to one slip and lots of deep fielders away in the distance. No attempt to get him out at all. Then Root wonders why he gets two hundred and God knows what. FFS.

Mark Stoneman will be 31 this summer....six matches...average of 31. Vince doesn't have the mental concentration to be a test batsman.....ten matches average of 23. Malan has scored nearly two hundred runs in this test yet still has a test average under 36.....hardly the 'real deal'......He might have a future. We do have pace bowlers in England.....Wood isn't the only one at all....we didn't select them.....it's harder to be dropped than be selected. He has raw pace but something else must be amiss with his game as Surrey released him. Plunkett is injured. There is a young South African bowler called Matt Pillans who plays for Surrey but has been on loan to Leicestershire who is very fast so perhaps we should fast track him an English passport. Another young fast bowling Saffer is Brydon Carse on Durham's books

Most test careers end in their thirties due to reflexes slowing.....for some it happens quicker than others. You get your Rogers and Stewarts but you also get your Vaughan.....the test batsman still in their mid thirties is reasonably rare. I'm mega p1ssed off......What's happened that we seem to accept that 5-0 is anywhere near acceptable when we pay these guys bucketloads of cash compared to better cricketers of the past. Broad can't bat anymore - since he was hit his confidence is shot. Jimmy can't bat either. So our headline bowlers deliver at 85 mph and neither can add a score, I heard on the radio that Joe Root has his young family out with him. Cook's form has been poor for ages and his slip fielding is now very average. Moeen doesn't want to bowl and there are no leaders - Jonny has cojones, but he's the only one. Malan batted well - but we need big, big hundreds.

Last time England came back from being so soft we had Nasser Hussain to come in and be captain. He had less talented cricketers perhaps but the ones he had seemed harder to beat. Do we have any Hussain like figures to put some fight back into the national side? Why do we seem obsessed with always giving the captaincy to batsman.......so often it seems to screw with their form....are bowlers so stupid? Willis was an ok captain.

A bowler's not in the best position to set the fields, or able to be as objective about bowling changes. Flintoff didn't exactly go well.
