The dangerous liberal world of California

New laws now in place for Democrat-run California. Maybe time for me to start packing my bags...

Cops are now forbidden to ask someone's immigration status unless they commit a crime. Landlords are also not allowed to report illegal immigrants who are renting from them.

Vehicle registration fees will increase from between $25 and $175.

You can now make up your gender on your California state ID.

School employees with concealed carry gun permits are no longer allowed on school property. Just criminals and cops!

But hey, smoking weed is legal!

As an aside, homelessness increased again this year in the state. More than a quarter of the entire homelessness population live in California.

With high taxes and charges all over the state, it still manages to be $400bn in debt.

Correct. Firstly, the police have no legal basis to question individuals about offences, without reasonable suspicion. The law is pretty clear about these, that in order to ask someone anything that could incriminate an individual, they must first be read their Miranda rights, which requires that they be under arrest. This isn't just a legal right for American citizens, but for all individuals in the US.

Landlords should not be renting property to illegal immigrants in the first place. Presumably they have a legal obligation to determine the legal status of an tenant - Granted I don't think this should protect illegal immigrants from ICE etc but its also a serious offence committed by the landlord, surely after 9/11 and homeland security being founded; a landlord should be required to establish certainity of status of tenants.

I expect there will be a lot of this in the coming years as states and cities attempt to recover revenue lost to tax cuts.

You can have male, female or non-binary.

Presumably with firearms. I mean what could possibly go wrong with having any number of untrained people allowed to carry firearms on a school premises.

For the record, criminals aren't legally allowed to carry guns on school property either, nor are students - I would imagine that those doing so are turned over to the police. The US has a problem it seems with workplace and student mass shootings.

I don't think it was ever illegal - Possession, supply and attempting to supply, weed are illegal - Oddly being intoxicated with a controlled substance isn't illegal or consuming a controlled substance isn't an offence (unless you do so to avoid arrest).

Shocking and an example of how elected representatives fail the people of states - The undermining of things like welfare provision and social services conflegates such issues dramatically.

Definately a problem, but the US does seem to be all about paying as little tax as possible and small government - this is a problem inherent in the US in terms of provision of essential state services (prisons, welfare, mental health etc) being unfit for purpose - not just in California but everywhere.

I don't see how Republican tax cuts are going to help any of these problems.

You ever actually been down South Stirling or shall I trot out again my first hand experience in Mamou Louisiana of seeing a black guy seriously threatened by some Good Ol' Boys with being shot for having the audacity to walk down Main Street wearing his army uniform while home on leave?

Or in Walker,Louisiana where a British GI bride living there told me of her shock arriving there after the war and seeing blacks regularly being strung up on the street...and local Good Ol' Boys still reminiscing wistfully about the "good" old days.

Racism and being a Good Ol' redneck Boy are part and parcel of one and the same package down there...

Blooming good stuff if we are less tolerant of that over here nowadays I'd say, rather than see that as a negative trend in modern society.

I agree! I laugh at Democrats about this all the time. None of this affects me but you never know what will change in the future. It's what happens when you have the loony left in power.

You miss the point. People with firearms permits ARE trained to use the weapon and legally allowed to do so. So these law-abiding citizens would protect the school if a criminal decided to go in and start shooting. Once the criminal has shot or threatened to shoot, then it's too late to be turned over to the police.

When has this been the case? Not under Obama. California is BIG government with BIG taxes – and it is failing. Big time. It's what happen with socialists in charge.

This is simply not true. Many states allow anyone to purchase firearms without the need even to get a permit, let alone take any training.

Also, outside of Hollywood, people need constant training to maintain their skills and reflexes. It's not like riding a bike. It's also why untrained armed people are statistically much more of a danger to themselves and those around them than any incremental safety gains made by having a gun.

I'll let an Army vet explain it further. [Link]

I'm not sure whether its more PC nonsence or not, but whenever the Governor (Nearly always a Democrat) has a press conference to announce a State of Emergency like the NY one is doing now. That they insist in having someone next to them 'signing' I know they are trying to be inclusive but with only roughly 3 out of 1000 people actually deaf or hard of hearing surely a case of trying a little bit too hard to be 'inclusive'
