very good post, Silvertop.
Unfortunatly more & more people think we've not paid nearly enough for past history.

Oh dear, I consider myself part of the pragmatic middle but I do agree at least with the sentiments of the OP.

The majority is silent and absurdly tolerant. A woman runs her shopping trolley into you. It really hurts. You apologise to her. A person nonchalantly lets their dog hump your leg to completion. You tolerate and laugh it off. We have grit; we tolerate; we say nothing.

Moreover, the majority you talk about have no political representation. I once asked a person who organises a public swimming diary why actual public swimming for those who paid their rates was limited to about 2 hours a week. The rest was filled with women only, disabled only, lesbian only [keep your mind on topic!] etc. Because white men have no lobbying force came the reply.

A while ago I was in conversation with a Jewish friend who was ranting about the shift to populism. I told her that people were getting tired of having our shortcomings rubbed in our faces. I am aware that we were central in the great slave genocide and hardly welcoming to the Windrush and similar migrations. Our historic attitude to mental and physical disability and sexual orientation also left something to be desired. However, there have been cosmic improvements; and we are still working hard to make life as tolerable and fair for everyone.

So stop saturating the media with "poor me" stories where a diversity tick box was incorrectly filled in. Don't give a 30 min TV special to a "comedian" because they are Asian and female - they also have to be funny. Stop airing constant grievances by those of some minority origin - there are other news stories.

Anyway, the point I made was that there are terrible moments in history that arose because the majority were ignored. In this country's case that is only likely to happen if they try and re-schedule the Archers. However, you can't always rely on our tolerance. A breaking point will be reached and, when it does, for an ageing liberal like me the populist backlash could be very unpleasant indeed.

The obvious example of this is the Weimar Republic. Moderate politicians failed to deliver sensible solutions to real problems. Germany then lurched to the right but there was a moment when it could also have gone communist. Anyway the extremists took over because of the failure of the moderates. Shutting down the discussion suits the tactics of both the far right and the hard left and any decent politician should speak up for the rest of us even if the topic is uncomfortable.

That is the danger. We have already seen a sniff of it around Europe.

We are seeing what happens when minority politics dominates the mainstream right now.

We have a PM who says she is a feminist in a country where only 7 percent of women also say they are feminists. That's despite a media and education system that constantly promotes it and lefty celebrities that constantly feeds the lie that feminism is fair.

We have a Labour party that is reflective of the party membership but is more left wing than its main voting base, plenty of whom are concerned with immigration and voted leave.

Our current main parties are not reflective of mainstream political opinion in the country from either the left or right.

I feel that it is a wider problem, not just our political system, with the causes and effects being seen and felt accross the entire spectrum of our public service institutions.

I see it as two specific problems.

The first is that victim hood pays. Essentailly if you are looking for a career within an organisation that is state funded, operates a lenient human resources policy (you are almost impossible to sack) and still throws in a bloody good pension along with a entire raft of other benefits then you need to play the game.

And that sympathy with, and continuation of, a culture of victim hood, for an ever increasing range of personal attributes or life style choices, is at the core of that. The irony of the entire Zeitgiest of 'diversity' is that what it really encourages is division and does so because the most culturally stagnent part of it i.e the British Left which is almost exclusively now white, middle class and University eductated, profits from setting us all at each others throats. There is absolutely nothing to be gained for a whole swathe of so called 'experts' by people actually getting on with their lives and taking responsibility for their actions.

Whilst the best and the brightest were out there chasing a dishonest buck in the private markets, the public sector was effectively allowed to become donimated by a Cultural Marxist agenda that has cosied up to big business.

So if you are a corporation such as Coca-Cola then as long as you make sure your advertising and sponsorship 'celebrate' the alternatives that the public sector seek to promote, they will stand aside as you crack on with selling what is effectively poison to the masses. That is one example but there are a myriad of others out there.

Now if that was just private enterprise, then it would not be so bad but when your Police service turns up at Gay Pride events in rainbow stripes, you know that something has gone very, very wrong with our society along with that same organisation being more concerned with arresting people for tweets rather than investigating burglary, we are in the twilight zone.

The second is that our core British culture is fragmenting at an alarming rate. Now I am more than willing to accept that cultures need to evolve, and that would have been difficult to define what 'British culture' was 100 years ago, let alone now, but in this modern age, with its mulitude of media and other culturally shaping influences, it is now in danger of disintegrating altogether.

Perhaps because of the flexibility of the English language (I believe that language is at the heart of how we best understand respective cultures), we might cope better than most, but this picture is one that is appearing accross the Western World and none of it offers much in the way of a positive future.

And this is state of affairs that suits both the Left, who despise the nation state, and the global corporations who wish to be free of the constraints of national interest because of the potential risk it poses to their profits. Your averge leftie and your FTSE 100 CEO both desire open borders and are willing to scrach each others backs to campaign for that. That is a powerful, if nefarious, alliance.

And at the heart of this is ensuring that the majority remain compliant. That the majority can be cowed by all sorts of accusations, can be cowed by the wagging finger from above, can be cowed by people who essentially want us to do what they say whilst maintaining a firm grip on their self-serving way of life.

That is why they hate Brexit. That is why they hated Trumps victory. Because the proles failed to do what their supposed betters told them to do. And why they are doing their utmost to usurp both events.

Where this all ends, I have no idea but there is a certain fun in watching it all unfold although that does comes with a note of caution because I suspect it is all going to end in tears and probably those of my Grandchildren.

The thread is totally wrong.

The 'majority' are not a handful of old gits on a football site, yours truly included....

If you have views they are yours, not a 'majority'.

A majority of one, themselves, in most cases.

A valid observation but any society, if it wants to function in any form of positive sense, has to have certain core attributes and shared values at its core.

We could argue about what those are until the cows come home, and a good time would be had by all but for me the one trope that constantly comes from the left is a disdain for the notion of populism.

What the hell is wrong with populism? Surely that is at the heart of what the democratic process actually is? And why would the left in particular be so against it?

Just watched the news two subjects were prominent, Brexit and Euthanasia, Brexit is being thwarted by the House of Lords, Euthanasia suddenly sounds quite interesting, only a joke, not serious

A very, very good post.

The only point I would add is that whilst I fully acknowledge that Trump and Brexit were protest votes, for many of the reasons you describe above, whether these protests are actually of any benefit to the 'protestors' remains to be seen.

People want something different, that much is clear, but I worry our search for something different has lead to decisions which ultimately will prove to be to the detriment of the majority.

They may succeed in bucking the trend, but to what end?

They were for the benefit of all, in equal measure.
