Should never have devalued nursing and made the qualification so financially unappealing. Very bad idea long term.

I still get angry about that. They literally pulled the ladder up for many bright, mainly working class girls, who always had nursing as a social mobility option.

Now they have to take on large debts, which is an obvious disincentive.

Not only is a worldwide spreading virus very different to (third world) child hunger but the sufferers of this are the citizens of the nations in lockdown. Countries with inadequate welfare will have people suffering, including USA. Ours will be shared around a little more.

You have to consider what the reaction would’ve been if thousands of British under 45’s contributing in taxes ended up in hospital or without ventilators.

It looks to me like we’re going to let loads of them go to work and mingle soon so they’ll have their own decision to make rather than be shocked when out of nowhere they end up in corridor unable to breathe. The younger the people you work with the higher the chance of contracting and transferring to whoever and whoever you’re trying not to.

As I said in an earlier post, 30,000 died in the UK from Hong Kong flu in 68.

What you're essentially saying is that because bad stuff is going to happen to a very small percentage of economically viable people under 60, that we should lockdown society.

We have already done huge worldwide damage with this over reaction. The extent of the damage to ourselves is going to ruin and yes kill others in many implicit ways over time. Every day deepens the mess.

Far more will die from the 'cure' than will die from this virus.

At the moment many, if not most but certainly not all, politicians are behaving very well. Including our own. They do seem to "get it" at the moment.

I expect that as the verification of a vaccine will be carried out by the WHO, prior to general release, that no one country will possess the rights to it, or indeed that there will be just one vaccine

I suspect it’s suddenly dawned on most of them that they are totally irrelevant at the moment. All they can do is endorse the view of medical advisers. Ant & Dec could do that.

An interesting aspect to this is that, in NI and Scotland, Nursing is free - my friend from Donegal studies in Belfast and gets a grant too. So for some reason, foreign nurses in England and Wales and not in NI and Scotland. Frankly, the disparity makes no sense.

Yep, though there are plenty who wish to celebrate it....including the governments of the last couple of decades.

We should carve off part of the country for the lockdown sceptics and conspiracy theorists to roam free as they wish. They're just not allowed access to any hospital treatment.

It depends on which side of the fence you sit as to how these things appear.

Trump insisting his name appears on the cheques looks the same from everywhere.

Like a bailout for an Opera house. Who then shutter their doors lay off the staff & pay their patrons, that kinda improvement like?

Pavarotti bender.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I believe it is still a bursary in Wales too. I think think though you are wrong about "foreign" nurses. The NMC make it pretty hard for qualified nurses to get registered, especially over their English language skills and students from overseas pay even higher fees than "home" students, without any access to a loan. Those from the EU can still get a tuition fee loan but nothing for maintenance.

All student nurses were given a £5,000 yearly grant just after this government took office, which impressed me. Let's hope it helps with the recruitment, although their studies are badly affected right now and some dropping out with the stress.

Anyone can cherry pick one example and claim it is typical.

The foreign nurses wasn't my argument. I heard the NHS would fall apart if there weren't immigrants to do the jobs. It was from the people who didn't like the government's new immigration policies. Personally, I agree with restrictions on immigration, and thought that the argument didn't really add up - if decent initiatives, like the one you mentioned, were introduced.
