I must be the one going mad (and not all the world and its scientific experts with their prediction models).
Has anyone tried to work out what the HUMAN cost will be after this is all over, and compared it to the HUMAN cost if we had stuck to the "herd" option?
How many people will now lose their jobs, end up with nothing, have severe mental issues, die early because they've had to wait for so-called routine operations, topped themselves because they can no longer face their troubles etc. etc.?
And what will the authorities do when the virus returns, perhaps in a slightly modified form, with no vaccination and few people with any kind of built-up resistance to the current virus?
How many of the people who have died or will die from this virus would have died soon anyway from their underlying medical conditions? How many die from flu/pneumonia every year?
I have to confess I don't know the answer to these questions, But I'm not convinced that the new regime in this country is the better option. By all means we must protect the vulnerable but it shouldn't mean that the country should be shut down for the remaining 99%+ who will survive the virus.
Perhaps I've opened a can of worms in saying all this!

I can't say I agree with much of that, though some of us probably would....but we have kind of tackled it all earlier in the thread.

Posts like this make me feel that maybe this whole coronavirus thing is just a necessary bit of enforced euthanasia.

Who is going to post in news and politics when it's all over?

"Immigration brings more people into the country....more people equals more chance of incoming infections....spreaders and catchers."

I would have thought it was blindingly obvious that any such action would not be done by us unilaterally but in a coordinated way with others. Others who are taking broadly similar precautions and have broadly similar situations.

So long as the flows were also broadly similar then the health impact would be neutral but the economic and social benefits would be positive. For everyone not in the high risk categories maintaining social distance is what's important, and not where it's done.

I suspect that once the peak pases that will be the way things start to ease off anyway but cannot see any gain in total closure now and think a more nuanced approach would be better..

It's not that difficult.

I don't think the "herd immunity" concept has been abandoned at all. In fact it's the only practical way open to us at present. I think the current steps are all about managing the resources we have to cope with the predicted surge. After that is over the brakes will gradually be released and by next winter, although the numbers will doubtless rise again they will remain within the NHS's capacity until a vaccine is found.
