Suspect that we are moving into another arena when it comes to the demise of the BBC with this incident probably being seen as perhaps the actual fatal blow. An absolutely shocking inditement for a national broadcaster. Would have been bad enough for a commercial organisation but one that is dependent on a compulsory charge? The BBC has been a dead man walking for a while now but this will potentially hole it beneath the water-line now. An argument will be made that this interview led to Diana being in that tunnel in Paris. Now you can poke all kinds of holes in that, and with some justification, if you want to but in terms of the BBC trying to defend itself from the accusation, it is left utterly defenceless. It simply cannot protect itself from the deluge of crap about to hit it and the reverberations from this are up there with Saville. Potentially even more.

And you've got to laugh at his 'apology' followed by saying that it had no bearing whatsoever on her choice to do the interview (how the hell would he know), and how 'proud' he was of it. As damaging as it is I’m not sure some of the other parts of the press and characters coming out and having a pop can really take the moral high ground after their treatment of Diana and now repeating the trick with Harry.

While the press were quite awful in their treatment with Diana it must also be said that she made quite bad decisions herself that as a public figure will always be open to criticism and ultimately led her down unwise paths. Also it can be noted that she was quite happy using the media when it suited her. The same can be said for Harry. When it comes to the BBC, the big difference is that they are funded by enforced public subscription....which is deliberately and unfairly made difficult to get out of. Whereas if you don't like some rag paper you can quite easily not buy it.

The crucial factor in all of this. The old News of the World was a tabolid. Infamous for all kinds of stunts. And yet over the phone hacking scandal, gets closed down. No tears shed. But the BBC? From listening/reading more deeply into this, it is crystal clear that the BBC has to be put out its misery sooner rather than later. My understanding is that the BBC KNEW that Bashir had pulled this stunt prior to their appointing him, in 2016, as their chief religious and ethics correspondent. Seriously, WTF? Its over. Dead in the f***ing water in its current form. You might be able to make a case that what happened last century cannot be laid at the door of the BBC today and with some justification. But knowing what they did and yet still giving him a job in 2016 in that role? Its done. Over. Needs putting down.

The conservatives could have made drastic reforms to the BBC many times over the years but it's yet another one of those topics where they complain and make a big play to their grass roots while supporting and signing the BBC contractual subscription model as they did only the other year. You'll get the usual virtue signaling and the dismayed statements and warnings but I predict nothing concrete will actually be done that changes anything. This is how the game is played.
