Fair. I'm not saying it's not a good idea, just saying that it will be very interesting to understand how they're going to manage significant amounts of permanent layoffs over time, once the furloughing becomes too expensive, unwieldy or simply impossible to maintain as a system of effectively, artificial employment. The jobs simply won't be there in the short/medium term once this has played out.

I think the retail sector will be the hardest hit many of those shops were on the verge of going under before the virus.

Where the government can help is by kicking off these infrastructure projects as quickly as possible too often they are delayed for years because of planning issues.

The 'furlough' scheme is designed to last for three months and the same applies to the 'Mortgage holiday' the 'Self-Employed Support Scheme'.Rishi Sunak has made it very clear that all will be extended if necessary. From that timeframe it would appear that the Treasury has been hoping or expecting or both that the 'lockdown' will wind down from mid-June at the latest.

If it isn’t, I doubt very much that the Chancellor will suddenly withdraw life support from the economy but as he has mentioned he cannot save every job and business.
The OBR figures, although not a forecast or prediction are perhaps in the 'Ballpark' of the fall-out that will be the result of this dastardly pandemic.

In fairness, he's never going to say '3 months and that's it', as it would cause panic. Hence the classic 'and by the way' we won't be able to save all of you.

Portraying a sense of infinite payments and support whilst in the same breath saying it won't last forever.

The problem with the OBR figures, or any figures for that matter, is that they will change drastically within a few days of being issued.

I would be amazed if at least half of all people currently on furlough don't lose their jobs.

In entertainment/retail/food etc., way more than that.

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.

I wouldn't like to speculate in percentage terms but I agree with your general sentiments.

Oh and all this hand clapping for the NHS bulls*** sickens me. Also the disgusting attempt by the Guardian to justify yet more mass immigration off the back of it.

This anti white bulls*** sickens me.

You know what would sicken you even more? Having no doctors to treat you because you don't like immigrants

One must hope form his posts that should he get this virus and require hospital treatment that he would give it up for someone more appreciative of everything every single person in the NHS is doing right now.

Eerrrr....Whoosh.

Also immigrants are a minority in the NHS. Even with Doctors and Nurses it's half.

But still, lets not have reality interfere with your anti white crap.

Has anyone paused to give any thought to the reality of furloughing?

From what I'm reading, it seems very likely that most people who have been furloughed will lose their jobs anyway at the end of the scheme. Especially if you work in the entertainment, physical retail, food and drinks industries. Screwed.

It can't be continued indefinitely, and similarly the longer we go without a vaccine, the more damage is being done psychologically and economically, leading to a far longer recovery period than some are still assuming is possible.

I even think that it could be as high as 50% overall, and much much higher for some industries (as mentioned above).

Delaying rather than solving unemployment IMO

Has your opinion changed on when this lockdown should be lifted?

With the understanding that businesses will have to find ways to enact social distancing and hygiene methods. I've noticed some already using intelligent work-arounds already.

Last year an estimated five million children worldwide died of hunger...similar to every year...and tens of millions have stunted growth...I didn't notice any destroying of economies over it....which is a weird response anyway.

Next year, many more children will probably die of hunger as we're skint......Still, you know, have economically healthy people stay in and save lives and all that....while a percentage of them will be destroying their own.

Has it crossed your mind at all that had we not spent the past 20 years targeting immigrants, while ignoring the NHS being stripped of funding, maybe, just maybe, we would be been better prepared for this?

Stripping spending? We spend 20 percent of total spending on healthcare. If that's your idea of stripping spending...It's like up is down.

As for immigration....We have been 'targeting immigrants' have we? So why are they so obsessed with still coming if life is being made so hard? The percentage increase in immigrants over the last twenty years is ridiculous. They have no right to strip their own countries of their talents, which in many cases need them far more than we do....and come here where we are disenfranchising our own youth for profit.

Not only is a worldwide spreading virus very different to (third world) child hunger but the sufferers of this are the citizens of the nations in lockdown. Countries with inadequate welfare will have people suffering, including USA. Ours will be shared around a little more.

You have to consider what the reaction would’ve been if thousands of British under 45’s contributing in taxes ended up in hospital or without ventilators.

It looks to me like we’re going to let loads of them go to work and mingle soon so they’ll have their own decision to make rather than be shocked when out of nowhere they end up in corridor unable to breathe. The younger the people you work with the higher the chance of contracting and transferring to whoever and whoever you’re trying not to.

Should never have devalued nursing and made the qualification so financially unappealing. Very bad idea long term.
