I'm not sure you can blame the EU for the performance of education in individual countries that said wow just wow.

Still I expect the Remainers will claim that the success of UK colleges is down to EU funding.

Anyway well done to our universities as for the EU not our problem.

Well, they made "Erasmus" and "losing (cough) EU funding" a central part of why leaving the EU is a "bad idea". I'm trying to see why remaining, based on these rankings, is a good idea.

I think we're agreed that the University industry's stance (and it is an industry now...) that Brexit will destroy their standings in research and teaching is hogwash.

The trouble with third level institutions is that no-one is allowed to be the voice of dissent. It is either sign up to the agenda or get the sack. People like David Starkey, Charles Murray and Richard Dawkins are incredibly rare. Basically, they are not reliant on keeping people happy to keep their jobs. They are all established and well-off. If a young academic was to follow in their footsteps - they would never be heard of again.
As part of an EU project on borders, I wrote a paper about why EU Federalism was doomed to failure. [I cited previous attempts at European unification] It was due to be published - I was told in no uncertain terms to withdraw my paper or face ostracism. I didn't do the heroic thing, let's put it that way.

Conservative MP Peter Bone has introduced his bill for a 'United Kingdom Day' bank holiday to be held each year on the closest Friday to June 23 in celebration of leaving the EU.

Should stir the pot a little that one.....but with 80 seats it would go through if Boris wants it. I think it's a good idea but perhaps a little soon.

I don't see anything other than the truth coming from the EU. They agreed a "deal". Now our government seem intent on breaking it. Trust is essential between partners if real progress is going to happen.

Nor have I seen bad manners from the EU in the past either. What I have seen is a considerable degree of patience in the face of something they believe to be incredibly ill advised.

Doesnt matter what they think, the people of the UK decided to leave and the EU just have to get used to the idea..

When a humanitarian crisis strikes it is incumbent on all civilised countries to assist in efforts to mitigate the impact.

Didnt see the EU rushing to provide aid to the flooded regions of the UK, the same UK that provides millions in aid to other countries....did India,China or anyone else send us aid? NO THEY DIDNT!

Well, here's your much-vaunted "European harmony and solidariy".

Funny how they've been lecturing us nasty, selfish, insular, closed-minded Brexiteers for wanting to leave the inclusive, friendly harmonious EU. The months and months of supposed moral high-ground. The tut-tutting at little Englanders thinking about just themsevles, and not the glorious pan-European utopia.

Judge these people by their actions, not their words.

Slightly off kilter but in the same vane, but aren't the EU refusing to allow British & European planes to stop flying empty or near to empty aircraft because the airlines are worried they'll lose those slots.

I am sure WE will explain that this is nonsense and probably Boris’s fault. Sums up the EU, all about themselves, couldn’t give a toss about the worldwide implications

I don't have an issue with this you are supposed to look after your own. My problem is with the people who can't see that and think we are bad to want to do the same.

Within the EU every country is looking after their own interests and if that coincides with the interests of the EU then fine but ultimately national interests will override the EU when it is really important as this shows.

How many EU countries are willing to help Greece with the refugee crisis? lots of warm words but very little practical help.

Indeed. But by outright theft of someone else's property? In one case, it was a shipment from China that was technically never on German soil, yet was... ahem "inspected" and essentially impounded.

Imagine the press if Boris even a much as suggested that..

I just think they should practice what they preach.

With the current crisis dominating our thoughts, and the headlines, it is totally understandable that the subject that did last year, Brexit, is now very much running at the back of the field.

Whether the need to concentrate on the crisis, both at home and in the EU, means that the timelines will be forced to be extended remains an open question but it would not surprise me. Events change plans. Or at least if you are wise they do.

This was published by the BBC yesterday and it again raises two questions. Firstly, when will the Intelligence and Security Committee report on interference be published, and secondly, if Johnson had not suppressed it last year would we still have had a Tory government with such a large majority?
