Typical far left tactic, off to Godwin's law we go. As African chiefs were selling the slaves to the British and everyone else and had been using slavery since their history was recorded, perhaps you should start over there.....they did genocide as well seeing as you want to bring up the Holocaust from the earlier part of last century...which had nothing to do with the British anyway. Hey, slavery is actually still going on over there in parts of Africa....but where do we find the oh so brave people who pretend to care about slavery? Yeah, in Bristol and waffling away mostly in middle class enclaves....clap clap, really making a difference comrades. Far left attacks on history are frequently anti white disfigured one eyed takes.

There were many efforts to give wording to this statue that acknowledged Colston's role in the slave trade, but all failed due to objections from small interest groups, notably the Merchant Venturers Society. Hence nothing ever got done. I'm now glad an artefact like this can be somewhere with the appropriate historical context it so desperately needed - a museum. So people can learn the facts, as you're keen for them to do.

There was a discussion and the merchants venturers did not object, they had not agreed what wording would be placed on the plinth. A fake narrative has been formed that there was a groundswell of popular opinion in opposition to the statues existence, there wasn't, when self interest groups approached the topic the response was widespread indifference from Bristolians. As soon as you use your money for slavery activities, I don't really think how much of it is a factor. There are plenty of people that kicked ass for this country that had no involvement in slavery, we should put up statues of them. Unfortunately, there was a small part of history where we as a nation considered slavery to be a perfectly normal thing to do and that means a lot of legacies are going to be tainted, but that really isn't the publics problem. We will always have this debate. I know a lot of people in their 50s and over that think Jimmy Savilles statue should still be up, some in that age range will still argue the good he did makes him worthy of it, I am definitely not one of those people, 20 years ago or 200 years ago makes no difference.
