Natural disasters are always terrible and of course we know they adversely affect the poor and vulnerable.

I see the debate on climate change as a related but separate argument.

In an interglacial period, temperatures will rise, that much, anyone can figure out. How much humans have contributed to it is another matter.
It's easy to make a one sided argument.

This is such denial, head in the sand, nonsense. Scientists agree that climate change is real, that it is man made and that the things that are happening now are the predicted and predictable results of climate change.

There is no credible scientific opposition to the climate change consensus.

I just thought I'd put a silly little thread up about (Whitney) Houston but blimey look at all the po faces! Nice to get an insult from Pikey though, it wouldn't have been right without one, the old b******.

Maybe we should launch an urgent appeal to get Ray some life preservers.

I can swim better than you, I bet (former competitive distance swimmer).

I don't need a life preserver but thousands of my fellow Houstonians do. Please get them together and ship them over. Thanks.

I doubt there will be a change of heart from those who deny climate change. However, this bears all the hallmarks of a storm that was far worse and for more badly behaved due to climate change. It sped up as it reached the coast (weird) and went from a Tropical Storm to a Cat 4 hurricane in 44 hours (crazy). Because warmer seas mean more moisture in the atmosphere, it had far more water to collect and dump on its way.

It's not like this storm doesn't happen without climate change; but climate change definitely made this storm far worse that it would have been otherwise. We're talking about a 1/2 degree increase in sea temperature made Harvey the biggest rain-maker ever to hit the US, instead of just a weekend of bad weather for southeast Texas. Sea level rises renders existing sea walls etc. as inadequate as the storm surge ahead of such storms are increased. There's a multitude of ways that climate change ramps up individual weather events, and things like Harvey are a manifestation of those things in perfect combination.

NASA’s own data reveals that worldwide ocean levels have been falling for nearly two years, dropping from a variation of roughly 87.5mm to below 85mm.

The problem (as i see it) is what/who to believe in regards to climate change when the whole 'industry' appears to amount to nothing more than, surprise surprise, yet another way to tax the people. Yes, i have a special lightbulb and a shopping bag for life (Steve Hughes) but what friggin' good is that when China has poured more concrete in the last 10yrs than the IOUSA has in it's history and Obama dropped bombs at a rate of one every 30mins of his presidency!
We're being taken for mugs..........in my humble.

Edit: Sorry, meant to wish you and others all the best in these circumstances.

That works too.

I'm off to scavenge packing boxes and then go help a friend clean up after they had 6 feet of water in their (one story) house this weekend.

I didn't mention global warming or climate change. Stop looking for arguments.

Just because the majority of the media say it's doubtful it exists, doesn't make over 90% of climate scientists wrong.

It's worth considering how little the media have shown the tragedy around Mumbai.

Irony alert.

I agree actually. It's because we relate to people of similar culture more than others. Human nature and all that.

That's right countries are signed up to the climate accord because of the scientific evidence presented to them.

So why is the USA not joining in just isolationism should be at the helm IMO.

Media? Dis-credited more interested in tracking down a possible 'sexist' remark than in the future of the world.

The (owned) media do not care about Mumbai as it serves no purpose.
