The visa is for an initial 30 months after which further leave to remain is granted, so long as you have behaved yourself, sat another English test (our nearest being in Cardiff) and shelled out lots of dosh, including the NHS surcharge (which is ironic as she works for the NHS). FLR is now known as "pre-settled" status. After another 30 months indefinite leave to remain is granted (settled status). Another English test, a "life in the UK" test (which many Brits would fail) and a shed load of dosh.

The 6 month thing is because she is not allowed to be away from the UK for more that 6 months concurrently without transgressing her visa conditions. If she did a whole new application would be required and that can only be applied for abroad. The Home Office changed the rules whilst we were out of the country. It used to be that it was 6 months in any year, so by straddling 2 years you could be away for almost 12 months and not risk your visa. Now it's 6 in any 12 months, which makes more sense. She was fine but they needed to check.

I don't think any of us really know how any sector, public or not, will operate during this crisis. I have been very impressed so far with the attitude shown by the NHS and their flexibility and level headedness. I am even having to start to revise, on one level at least, my opinion of Johnson. He seems to have escaped from the shadow of Cummings for the moment and is appearing more human as a consequence.

Thanks for the explanation. I can understand why they have introduced this but as normal, the genuine people “suffer” due to those that abuse the system. Hope she has ILR now so no more potential problems will be encountered

Just think. If Corbyn's labour had won last year's General Election he would have had to govern from his front room and hold cabinet meetings over Skype

If Corbyn had won he'd have supported the virus!

You may not have noticed. That is exactly what Johnson is doing. Allowing it to grow at what we hope is a controlled pace.

I’m not convinced of some of the messages to the people. Use of words like ‘war’, which will however much be for his own popularity cause. It’s putting the wrong feelings into the people and it isn’t a war or anything like one unless you make it so. I imagine that’s Dominic Cummings’ work. On the BBC2 documentary last night it said DC would be measured during this when he has no control over the public thinking in fast changing times.

He’s not doing anything to calm the excessive buying which is still going on, even though the supermarkets claim its only 3 items max. You can just get variations of one thing or get every different type of meat in every different cut, every morning.

There were announcements in Sainsbury this morning about the restrictions but as the shelves were empty it was academic anyway

funny what disappears, Mayonnaise is now like gold dust - unless you get the pricey stuff, good for Hellmans but that's not much of a silver lining

Not really because all those sandwiches purchased out of the home are now made in the home.

Priti Patel now going on and on about a Windrush report in the commons as we speak. Still no sign of the grooming gang report and we are in the middle of a national crisis.

f*** the Tories.

Seconded.

The Tories aren't really conservatives, they are neo liberals happy to play the 'ethnicity only matters for the non English' game.

They are still amusingly scared of being called racist......when the whole point of a nation is ethnocentrism in the first place.

That's why the 'progressive' left are so against nations.....they only relate to it when they have no other choice....like it's something they don't want to touch.

so self isolating workers who would normally buy a tuna and mayo sarni for lunch are now making it at home hence the shortage, aha, I see, tuna tins would undoubtedly be a staple at a time like this, so maybe it's not all tuna and mayo, interesting, we're not that big on potato salad in this country nor cole slaw, no I am still unsatisfied by your logic, self isolation on a grand scale would surely mean less sandwiches not more and hence more mayonnaise

It's easy when most of the cabinet are not ethnic English or as you say out and out "liberals" anyway.

It's amazing how the Tories just follow the Labour party "progressive" agenda by a few years despite the latter being out of power for so long now.

There are now some 30 compensation schemes for Windrush, re-training schemes and all kinds of other provisions. The people impacted are probably in their hundreds or low thousands and the worse thing that happened I believe is they were deported by mistake.

Contrast this to probably hundreds of thausands of white children, raped and sold into prostitution and slavery, drug addicton and in some cases murder and the goverment have still not even recognised the issue and won't even release the work they have done on this. The hypocrisy is blinding.

The white working classes are second class citizens at best.

People are gradually waking up to this though.

Well, we are.

There is an ocean of 'go along to get along'....mind you was ever thus....people have mortgages at the end of the day.

Still, the extent the English have bent the knee and gone against their own interests beggars belief.

No matter how you look at it there are incredible levels of self interest and passing of the buck......previous generations wouldn't have accepted this.....But most of the English and UK generally...including Ireland seem to have accepted their demise and are meekly giving away their own country without even caring......just as long as they get their creature comforts.
